Mail went to the wrong character when first names matched

An October 8 three-character test delivered mail to the wrong same-first-name recipient. Another player reported missing mail and a Target is Unfriendly error. Check before mailing valuables.

Status: Players reproduced mail errors again on October 8. An earlier fix announcement does not establish correct delivery to shared-first-name recipients in the current beta. The exact build in these tests is unknown.

Updated What changed

Added two October 8 reports: a three-character test delivered mail to another recipient with the same first name. Another player reported missing mail and a Target is Unfriendly error. Neither report names the exact client build.

Description

This is an archive backfill for September 18 to October 6. Blizzard says each full two-part character name is unique within a region, but first names can be shared. In the beta, several players reported that sometimes rejected a letter to another character with the same first name or delivered it to a different recipient. They documented this in issue #24 and separate Blizzard forum threads. One forum player thought the bug was fixed on September 25. A GitHub comment from October 6 describes mail from strangers again, but gives no fresh test with a build number. Mail behavior on 1.60.1.70245 is unconfirmed. At 07:02 MSK on October 8, Monza described a controlled test: Monza Moonglade could not mail Monza Myzrael because the game said the sender was mailing themselves. Nonza Lastname then mailed Monza Myzrael, but Monza Moonglade received the letter. This is a direct current-beta test, but the player did not name the client build. At 03:29 MSK, another player reported that mail to characters with common first names did not arrive or was rejected as a hostile target. The player could exchange mail with characters whose first names were unique.

Effect

Before sending valuable items or gold to a character with a shared first name, check delivery with a letter that has no valuable attachment. Stop if the intended recipient cannot confirm it arrived. No universal workaround has been verified.

How to reproduce it

  1. For a controlled check, use two characters with the same first name and different last names. This combination caused the cannot-mail-yourself error in the original report. The sources do not state a level requirement for mail access.
  2. At a mailbox, enter the second character's full name as the recipient. Send only a letter without a valuable attachment and ask the intended recipient to confirm delivery. One report used one copper, but even that test may go to another character.
  3. Test again from a character with a different first name. Players reported that the interface accepted such mail but a different character with the recipient's first name received it.
  4. Record the date, build 1.60.1.70245, the intended full name and actual recipient without posting private details. Add the result to the original issue. Do not rely on creation order to predict delivery: player reports disagree.

Further conditions

  • Archive backfill. Reports about missing Auction House mail need their own test. A hyphen between first and last name worked for one player but failed for another.
